Dig In - jewelry objects for a contemporary dining culture 2023
The project reimagines eating utensils, encouraging users to actively participate in the design. The design addresses the diverse demands of various foods, aiming to create a visual and thematic unity among the objects. By handcrafting each piece from silver, the utensils are personalized for optimal handling and longevity, reflecting a return to past customs. The designs explore three potential directions for the future of cutlery: reviving old traditions, blurring the line between decoration and function, and enhancing the connection between the user and the object. With the changing eating culture and the influence of international cuisines, Dig In - jewellery objects for a contemporary dining culture invites viewers to consider how the form and type of eating utensil suit their needs.
By personalizing the objects, they become valued possessions, extending the life cycle of cutlery beyond disposable options. The vision is for users to carry their custom designs and pass them on to the next generation, promoting sustainability and involvement in the design process. The project began with an investigation into historical changes in eating utensils and table manners in Germany. A workshop with participants further explored new approaches and forms for eating utensils, emphasizing sensory perception and handling over mere functionality.
